SHIATSU

A therapeutic form of bodywork from Japan.

Based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the aim of a treatment is to restore harmonious flow of Qi and Blood, strengthen the vital organs and support the body to return to a state of balance.

During a treatment pressure will be applied to acupressure points and meridians using hands, elbows, knees and feet.

Techniques such as Cupping, Gua Sha and Moxibustion may also be incorporated into the treatment.

Shiatsu is performed fully clothed on a futon on the floor. It is recommended that you wear loose, comfortable clothing and socks.

  • Cupping is a technique that uses fire and glass cups to create suction on the skin, increasing blood flow and drawing out cold and stagnation. It helps relax tight muscles and ease tension.

Cupping may leave circular marks on the skin, which are normal and usually fade within a few days.

  • Moxibustion is a warming therapy that involves burning dried mugwort (Moxa) over acupoints to promote the flow of Qi and Blood. It’s commonly used for menstrual discomfort, digestive weakness, and chronic pain.

The gentle heat of Moxa feels deeply nourishing - calming the nervous system and supporting the body’s natural capacity to heal.

  • Gua Sha is a traditional scraping technique using a smooth-edged tool to release muscle tension, improve circulation, and support the immune system.

Gua Sha may leave red or purple marks on the skin, known as petechiae — this is a normal response that reflects increased blood flow and the release of stagnation. These marks are not painful and typically fade within a few days.
